Driving from Nanaimo to Tofino: A Wild and Scenic Vancouver Island Road Trip

The drive from Nanaimo to Tofino is one of the most scenic routes on Vancouver Island, and while not every stop along the way stole my heart, the journey itself is unforgettable. If you’re road-tripping across the island, this stretch offers a little bit of everything—from dense forests and alpine lakes to dramatic coastal views and hidden roadside gems.

Nanaimo: A Tough Start with a Few Hidden Beaches

I’ll be honest—Nanaimo wasn’t my favorite stop. It felt more densely populated than the rest of the island, with a bit of a suburban, American feel. The beaches, especially around the city, had that frustrating “private access” vibe that made it hard to connect with the coastline. That said, Nanoose Bay and Dolphin Beach were two highlights in the area. If you're passing through, they’re worth a visit.

Random camping near Nanaimo proved tricky. The population density made it difficult to find quiet overnight spots. I was traveling in a truck with a canopy, so I made it work by pulling into quiet side streets after dark and rolling out early. A couple of close calls with security made it clear this isn’t the most welcoming area for vanlifers or stealth campers, but if you're low-profile and respectful, it's possible.

The Real Magic Starts After Port Alberni

Once you get through Nanaimo and head west toward Tofino, the vibe changes completely. After passing Port Alberni—which, let’s be real, has a bit of a gritty reputation—the road transforms. While the town itself didn’t feel like a destination, it marks the beginning of one of the most beautiful drives on the island.

The stretch between Sproat Lake and Kennedy Lake is absolutely stunning. Giant cedars tower overhead, the forest thickens, and the air starts to feel wild again. Driving this section feels like being transported to Northern California, surrounded by ancient trees and winding roads that hug the terrain.

If you’re lucky enough to time your drive during lupin season, like we were, the entire roadside bursts into color. Purple, pink, and blue blooms line the highway, making the journey feel even more magical.

Tofino Road Trip Tips: What to Expect on the Drive

  • Road Conditions: The Pacific Rim Highway (BC-4) is well maintained, but there’s one narrow section with one-lane traffic and steep drops. Drive with caution, especially if you're in a larger vehicle.

  • Fuel Up Early: Fill up in Port Alberni. Once you're past the town, services are limited until you reach Ucluelet or Tofino.

  • Stop Often: There are scenic pullouts, river viewpoints, and forest walks along the way. Even if you’re in a rush, it’s worth building in extra time to explore.

  • Wildlife: This stretch of the island is bear and cougar territory, so keep an eye out, especially around Kennedy Lake.

Final Thoughts

The Nanaimo to Tofino drive may start off slow, but it quickly becomes one of the most rewarding parts of a Vancouver Island road trip. Even if you don’t fall in love with Nanaimo, keep pushing west. Once you’re past Port Alberni and heading toward the coast, the landscape takes over. Towering forests, sparkling lakes, wildflowers, and dramatic coastal cliffs lead the way into Tofino, one of the most iconic destinations in British Columbia.

Whether you're in it for the scenery, the photography, or just chasing good waves and chill vibes, this drive is one to remember.
