The scenic drive from Sooke to Port Renfrew is one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline on Vancouver Island, and arguably on the entire west coast of North America. While the actual distance isn't far, this rugged route is packed with incredible beaches, old-growth forests, waterfalls, and wildlife. It’s the kind of drive that could take just two hours or turn into a multi-day adventure if you let it.
If you’re planning a Vancouver Island road trip, I highly recommend giving this section the time it deserves. Ideally, plan for three days and two nights. We did it in two days, spending the night at Sombrio Beach, but I left already wishing for more time. Every stop felt like its own little world waiting to be explored.

Sombrio Beach: Vancouver Island’s Hidden Coastal Gem
Of all the stops along the Sooke to Port Renfrew drive, Sombrio Beach was by far my favorite. We arrived on a Saturday night in June, which happened to be just after graduation season, so the beach had a bit of a party atmosphere. Normally, that would be great, but we were there for photography and quiet nature—not loud music and bonfires.
We camped in the parking lot (though many people pitch tents right on the beach), made a simple dinner, and headed down to the water for sunset with our camera gear. The light was incredible. With the tide out, the beach revealed glowing tide pools, smooth rocks, and golden reflections that were perfect for sunset photography.
One of the best-kept secrets of Sombrio Beach is the hidden waterfall, located at the far end of the beach. It’s a short walk through the forest and along a creek. Once you find it, you’re standing in a narrow slot canyon with a waterfall cascading into a pool—an absolute dream for photographers.
After sunset, we built a small fire and fell asleep in the car. The next morning, we brewed coffee on the beach and watched the dogs play in the surf. That’s when we noticed something incredible: a black bear was foraging on the rocks nearby, pulling mussels from the shoreline. It was relaxed and completely unbothered by the people on the beach. Seeing a bear on the coast in the wild, in such a peaceful setting, was one of the most magical moments of the trip.
Important note: Always respect wildlife and keep a safe distance. This is bear country. Pay attention to signs and keep food stored properly when camping.

Best Stops Between Sooke and Port Renfrew
This short stretch of highway is full of amazing places to explore. Here are a few stops worth adding to your Sooke to Port Renfrew itinerary:

The final destination on the route. Be sure to check out Fairy Lake, home to the famous bonsai tree growing from a log in the lake. It’s one of the most iconic photo spots in the area. Also, the local pub in Port Renfrew is a great place to relax and grab a bite.

If I Could Do It Again
If I were to repeat the trip, I’d definitely spend a night at Jordan River. There’s something incredibly calming about waking up to the sound of the ocean when you’re camping out of your car. And I would absolutely return to Sombrio Beach for a second night. It was one of the most unforgettable places I’ve ever visited, and it deserves more than just a single sunset.
